REWIRE THE BRAIN FOR HAPPINESS IN 2020!
Love this post from Dr. Janet Zadina! Check it out here. Please consider using gratitude journals with your students this new semester. Let's all look for things we're grateful for each day!
I teach Career Pathways. This class is a pre-class taken prior to the GED/HSE classes. In this class we do assessments to help them find out about themselves and what type of work or career fits them. We also going over training avenues, how to find a job, and what employers are looking for and soft skills. One of the assessments that I did with the class was CIS Learning Styles Survey. To get to this survey you go to ilcis.intocareers.org. You need to login. Under the Assessment Tab, under Informal Assessments there is Learning Styles. You can click on this and it gives this information: This survey can help you identify the ways you learn best. When you are in the world of work—just like in school—you will learn new things often. There are 24 items in the survey. For each item, choose the frequency that best describes you. The choices are: • Often • Sometimes • Not Often Be honest about your answers. Your answers will help you learn about yourself. Once you complete the survey, you can get your scores. It looks like this: LEARNING STYLES SURVEY - RESULTS Your Scores The learning style below with the highest score may be your preferred learning style. If you have more than one high learning score, that could mean that you use multiple styles and are able to be flexible depending upon the environment. This can be useful; it can also mean that you may find learning and working in occupations that require specific expertise difficult. Check Out Learning Style Study Tips Auditory Your Score: 30 You learn best through your ears. You sit where you can hear what is going on in the classroom. You like to listen to the lesson and take notes on it later. It is helpful if you can talk about the facts and concepts you learn in class with a friend or a study partner. You may hum or talk to yourself when you are bored. You remember things through the sounds related to the experience. The more you make learning auditory, the better you learn! Visual Your Score: 26 You learn best through your eyes. Learning is easier for you when information is presented visually. Charts, diagrams, images or written materials make concepts more clear. You prefer to learn from a book rather than a teacher who lectures. Sitting in the front of the room lets you look at the teacher and helps you focus. It may be difficult for you to complete work while talking with someone. You may like to picture ideas in your head, watch TV or videos. You probably take detailed notes. The more you make learning visual, the better you learn! Tactile Your Score: 24 You learn best through physical experience. You are a hands-on person, probably an athlete. You like to share your opinions with others. The more you can manipulate and touch information the better. Physical activity while learning helps you remember; like working on a lab experiment, or going on a field trip. You like to doodle, eat a snacks, or move frequently to help with concentration. The more you make learning tactile, the better you learn! It is important to understand the best way that you learn. When you are in class or learning on the job you will know what works best for you and what can help you retain more information. This is a good assessment to take, it will help you in class and where ever learning takes place.
I have always said that the more fun students have, the more they will learn. This idea of having a gratitute journal is really nice and positive. One of the activities I do as ice breakers the the second day of classes is a crossword with our names and a positive word(s) that begins with our capitals on the whiteboard and then they explain why they choose that word(s).
